Cane toad (Bufo marinus) Dan Papacek

About HopStop®

HopStop® is an efficient and humane way to be rid of the cane toad scourge. Cane toads are introduced pests that cause terrible harm to many of our native wildlife species. Vigilant control of cane toads in an area can help significantly reduce local populations and provide an opportunity for native wildlife to recover.

Where entire neighbourhoods and communities engage in cane toad control the results can be very worthwhile.

Be sure it is a cane toad

It is important that you do not treat native frog species by accident as they are an important part of our national biodiversity.
Cane toads are distinctive and can be distinguished by the following features:

the presence of

  • bulging ‘poison gland’ areas on their shoulders

  • a bony ‘M’-shaped ridge over the nose

the absence of

  • suckers under their feet

If you are still not sure the following links can help distinguish cane toads from native frog species.

HopStop - Cane Toad Control

Using HopStop®

Detailed instructions, provided on the can, should be followed carefully.

A quick spray of 2-3 seconds is sufficient to control most cane toads. Larger toads may require a second burst.

Cane toads stop moving very soon after treatment. Dead toads can be collected about 2 hours after treatment and disposed of by wrapping in paper or a plastic bag and placing into the household garbage.

HopStop® is the only legal and humane way to be rid of cane toads.
